If you are interested in smart home systems and automation, then you may well have heard of smart home lighting systems. Here at MDS Electrical we have recently attended a training course on the installation of smart home lighting with Rako Controls.

When it comes to smart home configurations the possibilities can seem almost endless, in this blog we will outline some of the key features and benefits that come with a smart home lighting set up.

Convenience

The main reason to opt for a smart home lighting system is the convenience it offers; you can program various scenes for each room depending on what you will be using it for. A scene is a selected set of settings for each light fitting in the room which is stored and can be recalled at the touch of a button. For example, you could have a bright and airy setting for your bedroom to activate when you first wake up, then a warmer setting with a lower light level to switch to in the evenings. The ability to set scenes means there is no need to adjust each light individually, and you can switch to vastly different aesthetics in an instant.

Smart lighting systems also offer the ability to control your lights from anywhere, you can do so using your smartphone or any other smart devices with an internet connection, from anywhere in the world! Other convenient features are the ability to schedule your lights on timers to fit your routine or come on based on your location using geofencing; this can detect when you are home and when you leave to control your lights accordingly – and if you ever want to override your settings, you can even use your voice.

Customisation

Depending on the specification you opt for, there are a range of customisation options that you can use to adjust your lighting. You can choose which light fittings are turned on, how bright they are, and with an RGB setup you can even adjust the colour.

Add-ons

Once you have a smart light system installed you can choose to expand it in the future, many manufacturers will offer various accessories, including motion sensors, daylight sensors, and keypads. These unlock further possibilities such as your lights being timed by the sunset and sunrise, lights automatically turning on when you enter a room, and physical buttons you can press to select your scenes.
