What is CCTV?
Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) is a camera, monitoring and recording system. The cameras capture images and video continuously throughout the day and night and can help in the resolution of disputes, in the event of criminal activity and where insurance claims arise.
In a CCTV system there are usually one or several cameras dependant upon each clients needs and the size of the property to be protected, a recording device and some way of retrieving video and monitoring the cameras remotely.
What are the benefits for homes?
CCTV has improved a lot over the years and many domestic customers find that a well-designed high-quality system such as the Uniview brand give them peace of mind, improved security, intruder deterrence and in some cases, lower home insurance premiums.
Intruders are more likely to avoid a property with a professional CCTV system installed and go after easier targets when scouting for burglary.
Can cameras ‘see’ at night?
The latest CCTV cameras have special low light technology in built that allows them to see very well at night as well as during the day. Some cameras are able to see in full colour even at night time as they are equipped with led lighting and low light assistance.
Many cameras now have the ability to record audio as well as video and some have the ability to question any would be intruders with a talk through function. With these functions, it is possible to hear what potential intruders are saying and warn them away with by talking through the cameras’ speaker to them.
Particularly useful for telling the delivery driver where to store your parcels safely as well of course!
What is the quality of images like?
Camera images are measure in Megapixels (MP). The higher the MP the better the final image. With more MP the images that are captured are larger and the ability to identify unique features on intruders and vehicles is improved.
Image quality is not only reliant on higher MP but also the correct installation to reduce infrared glare, minimise interference from objects and overall lens quality.
Our camera systems use high-quality lenses and along with professional installation techniques, you are assured of a great picture quality day or night.
How long do recordings last?
The length of time that recordings are stored for depends on numerous factors:
Hard drive size – The larger the hard drive in the digital video recorder the longer images can be stored before they are recorded over again.
Number of Cameras – The more cameras that are being used on a digital video recorder; the more storage will be needed. Lots of cameras and a small hard drive will result in a much shorter re-write time than only a few cameras with a very large hard drive.
Camera Image Quality (MP) – The more MP per camera, the more storage will be necessary on the digital video recorder. An 8MP camera requires roughly twice the storage of a 4MP camera as the images contain much more digital information.
The solution to keeping recordings for a long time is a very large hard drive. It is also possible to download important pieces of footage to other digital storage mediums to prevent accidental overwriting and data loss.
